I am currently working with Great Smoky Mountains National Park to assist with the preservation and organization of its textile collection. As part of this work, I am helping rehouse historic textiles in the park’s archives using appropriate archival materials and storage methods to improve their long-term preservation. This project has provided hands-on experience with textile collections care, including safe handling, rehousing, organization, and documentation of museum objects. Working directly with the collection has also allowed me to better understand the challenges involved in preserving fragile textile materials and the importance of preventative conservation in museum and archival settings. This experience is helping me develop practical collections-management skills while furthering my interest in textile preservation and the care of historic clothing and fabric collections.
