Visitor Research Proposal - Art

What and How Do You See? Exploring Visitors' Interpretation and Pursuing Deeper Engagement with Art, is a visitor research project proposal explores how adult museum visitors interpret an unfamiliar work of art when given opportunities to observe, reflect, and discuss their ideas before receiving established historical or contextual information. Rather than focusing on whether visitors reach a “correct” interpretation, the study examines how they notice details, develop questions, make personal connections, and construct meaning through the viewing process. Building on research that describes art viewing as an active process of inquiry and reflection, the project considers how visitors’ experiences, knowledge, and perspectives shape their interpretations while recognizing that contextual information can later add additional layers of understanding. Ultimately, this research seeks to identify ways museums can create more open and engaging viewing experiences that encourage visitors to feel comfortable, confident, and active in their own encounters with art.
